We are excited to announce the beta release of our latest environmental features and map data: Weather protection on sidewalks, tree canopy coverage, building canopy coverage, and sky exposure. These features are now live on our platform, aiming to enhance urban living by providing critical data to combat the effects of climate change, particularly the urban heat island effect.

Relevance and Significance Amidst Record-Breaking Heatwaves

As we release these features, the Northern Hemisphere is experiencing record-breaking heatwaves. From Asia to Europe and the United States, cities struggle to adapt to the increasing frequency and intensity of heatwaves, driven by climate change. For instance, in July 2024, an excessive heat warning was issued for much of Washington and Oregon, with potential temperatures reaching up to 43.3°C (110°F), posing a significant risk for heat-related illnesses. Meanwhile, parts of central and southern Europe are experiencing a deadly heatwave, with temperatures soaring towards 40°C (104°F), leading to weather alerts, forest fires, and melting pavement. In late May 2024, Northern India faced an intense heatwave, with one part of Delhi reaching a record 49.9°C (121.8°F), the highest temperature ever recorded in the capital.

These extreme weather events underscore the urgent need for urban adaptation strategies. Cities must evolve to provide better weather protection in public spaces to ensure the safety and comfort of their residents.

The Importance of Shade in Mitigating the Urban Heat Island Effect

Providing weather protection through shading vegetation, roof shade, or building canopy coverage are effective means to reduce the urban heat island effect. This phenomenon, where urban areas become significantly warmer than their open space surroundings due to human activities, exacerbates heatwaves, making them more deadly and uncomfortable.

A study published in the Journal of Sustainable Cities and Societies highlighted the role of urban greening in mitigating heat. The research found that green areas cool European cities by 1.07 °C on average, and up to 2.9 °C. Similarly, building canopies and other forms of shading can significantly lower surface temperatures, creating cooler microclimates within cities.
