In a city known for its automotive legacy, walkability might not be the first thing that comes to mind when thinking about Detroit, Michigan. Often characterized by sprawling, car-centric infrastructure, many parts of Detroit present challenges for pedestrians, with inconsistent sidewalk quality and limited pedestrian amenities. However, a growing number of urban revitalization efforts are reshaping this narrative, and footpath.ai is playing a role in this transformation.

During a recent trial in North Corktown, a neighborhood with a mix of older and newly revitalized areas, we mapped nearly 55 km of sidewalks, releasing over 7,000 walking person's view images. This extensive mapping highlights the physical walking infrastructure and provides insights into disparities that exist within just a few blocks. In some areas, residents are fortunate to have newly constructed, well-maintained sidewalks, while others are left navigating roads due to the absence of any pedestrian pathways.

How footpath.ai is making a difference?

Using cutting-edge AI and computer vision technology, footpath.ai maps urban pedestrian infrastructure, providing critical data that city planners, local authorities, and urban designers can use to enhance walkability. The sidewalk mapping project in Detroit reveals the discrepancies in pedestrian infrastructure quality, which can inform future urban planning to create safer, more inclusive environments for pedestrians, cyclists, and even those using wheelchairs.

Detroit may not traditionally be considered a walkable city, but this project contributes to a larger effort to change that perception. Initiatives like the QLine streetcar system, the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, and the revitalization of Eastern Market have already begun reshaping certain areas, but there is still much work to be done across the city. The data provided by footpath.ai can accelerate these changes, helping to ensure that every resident has access to safe, walkable streets, whether they’re in Downtown, Midtown, Corktown, or any of the city’s evolving neighborhoods.

Our mission is clear: to help make cities smarter, more walkable, and more inclusive for everyone.
