Creating inclusive, walkable cities is a key goal for urban planners and local governments worldwide. Our recent mapping project with the Waverley Council in Sydney covering areas including Bondi, Bondi Junction, and Waverley, has yielded valuable data that significantly enhances urban planning, accessibility, and walkability in these vibrant communities.
Comprehensive Mapping for Inclusive Cities
We have mapped nearly 85 km of sidewalk network in the Bondi area, Australia's top beach destination with 2.9 million visitors annually, as well as Bondi Junction and Waverley. This project involved capturing 7,300 panoramic sidewalk view images, offering a detailed and comprehensive view of the area's pedestrian infrastructure. In addition to mapping sidewalks, we detected and mapped 1,897 trees, 860 curb cuts/ramps, 341 public benches, 163 pedestrian crossings, and 131 bicycle racks. This extensive data collection supports urban planning efforts to create public spaces that are accessible and enjoyable for all residents and visitors.

Supporting Disability Access and Walkability
Australia’s Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) mandates that public infrastructure be accessible to individuals with disabilities. Our data provides local governments with a comprehensive view of footpaths, highlighting the locations of crossings and curb cuts. This enables authorities to identify and address accessibility issues effectively, ensuring compliance with the DDA and fostering a more inclusive environment.
Enhancing Green Spaces and Cycling Infrastructure
Greenery significantly contributes to walkability by providing shade, reducing urban heat, and enhancing the aesthetic appeal of streets. Our mapping project identified a substantial number of trees in the area, helping urban planners develop strategies to maintain and increase urban greenery.
For cyclists, secure bicycle parking is crucial. Our latest data release also includes a detailed map of bicycle parking spots in the Bondi and Waverley areas, ensuring that residents and visitors can easily find safe places to park their bicycles.
The data collected by footpath.ai supports local governments' efforts to improve urban planning. By providing detailed information about sidewalks, benches, trees, curb cuts, pedestrian crossings, and bicycle racks, this data empowers urban planners to make informed decisions. We are also excited to announce that some of this data will soon be published on OpenStreetMap for wider community use. This open data initiative aligns with our mission to contribute to the development of more inclusive and vibrant cities.
