Mapillary and Kartaview introduced community-driven contributions using smartphones and action cameras. GrabMaps in Southeast Asia took to scooters, using AI-powered dashcams for urban coverage. Meanwhile, high-end platforms like Mosaic and the Google Trekker offered precision through lidar-equipped vehicle and backpack rigs, powerful but out of reach for most.
At footpath.ai, we’ve taken a different path: lightweight, off-the-shelf gear designed for walkability-first mapping. Our tools are under 500 grams, worn on a helmet or bike, enabling anyone to map sidewalks, crossings, kerb ramps, and more, from the perspective of the people who actually use them.

In less than four years, footpath.ai has supported mapping efforts in over a dozen countries, from Sydney and San Francisco to Tel Aviv and Delhi.
